Unemployment rises in March 2014

The number of people registered as unemployed has risen by 1,947 people in the Canary Islands during March 2014 compared to the previous month (+0.75%)  reaching a total of 277,498 unemployed people in the archipelago according to figures released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

That said, these figures show that unemployment has dropped when comparing figures from the same month last year (2013) as with Canaries currently have 14,174  fewer unemployed people when compared to last year, a decrease of 4.86%.

By provinces, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has the higher number of unemployed people, reaching 147,310 of the population, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reached 130,188, representing an increase of 0.32% and 1.15% respectively. In the group of ‘under 25’ there are 19,114 people unemployed.

Nationally, figures show that unemployment dropped by 16,620 people to 4.79 million, a decrease of 0.35%, its biggest decline since 2006.

Again Nationally, the was an increase in foreign unemployment, where there was an increase of 4,599 people compared to the previous month of February (+8 %).
