Unemployment doubles in under three years

Unemployment in the Canary Islands has more than doubled in a period of 31 months according to recent figures. Unemployment was at 132.797 in August 2007 and it now stands at 261.534 (March 2010). The statistics are similar on a National level, where unemployment was at 2.03 million people in August 2007 and now stands at 4.17 million. By province, Tenerife has gone from 50.802 unemployed people in August 2007 to 107.174 in March 2010. Looking over a larger period, in March 2000 the unemployment figures for the Canaries was 89.303 compared to the current 261.534, an increase of 213.95% over 10 years.
