Los Gigantes beach security is mayors responsibility

Last Thursday in the Arona court, the mayor of Santiago del Teide, Juan Damian Gorrin confirmed that the Los Gigantes (Los Guios) beach’s security is the town hall, and ultimately as mayor, his responsibility. When asked in court whether he believed that this was the case he said yes. He went on to say that after the initial rock slide on the 2nd of October 2009 he ordered the area to be cordoned off to prevent any further incidents. A further rock slide on the 1st November 2009 then went on to kill two women. The court is trying to establish whether the area was clearly marked as dangerous. Gorrin went on to say that he had ordered the local police to verify the dangerous areas were blocked off to the public every day but was unable to say if this had been done. The Santiago del Teide has received a lot of criticism over how the area was marked as dangerous and the signage was only in Spanish (it is now also in English and German).
