General election campaign gets underway

The general election campaign has officially launched, with just over two weeks to go until polling day.

Campaigning began this morning at midnight with rallies led by acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of the conservative Partido Popular, Pedro Sanchez of PSOE, Pablo Iglesias of the far-left Unidos Podemos alliance and Albert Rivera of the business-friendly Ciudadanos party.

Early opinion polls suggest another hung parliament, however, that could all change as the campaign gets underway.

The election comes after Spain failed to elect an outright or coalition government in the December elections. If a coalition cannot be formed this time, Spain would face a third election in the autumn.
