El Hierro runs full day on renewables

The smallest island in the Canaries’ has notched up another record in its bid to become wholly self-sufficient in energy generation.

Authorities in El Hierro announced this week that power generated from natural sources has supplied all its energy for over 24 hours, beating the previous record of 16 hours set at the end of January.

120 tons of CO2 emissions and 1.5 tons of fuel were saved in the excercise.
