Tourist spend increases by 8% in the Canary Islands
International tourists have spent €4.644 million in the Canary Islands in the first five months of the year (2013), an increase of 8% over the same period of 2012, according to figures provided by the tourism expenditure survey Egatur, prepared by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
Average daily spending rose in the islands in May by 6.4% to €111, while the average expenditure per tourist increased by 7.8% to €1,081.
Nationally, International tourism spending reached €18.433 million in the first five months of the year, representing an increase of 7.9% over the same period of 2012, while the average daily spending rose by 4.3% up until May, to €110, while the average expenditure per tourist increased by 3.8% to €931.
The bulk of spending in the first five months of 2013 was conducted by British tourists, with a total spend of €3.390 million, which accounted for 18.4% of the total amount spent, an increase of 6.9%.
The British tourists were followed (in spend) by German tourists, with a total spend of €3,049 (an increase of 3.3%), Nordic countries accounted for €2.111 million (up 16.2%), and the French tourists spent a total of €1.852 million, an increase of 24.1%.
The Canaries is the autonomous community leading the Spanish league table with a total expenditure of €4.644 million in the islands, representing 25.2% of the total foreign spend, followed by Catalunya with €4,190 million (an increase of 10.7%).
