New seismic activity on El Hierro

There has been new seismic activity on the island of El Hierro, specifically in the area of Frontera. During Monday morning (4th June 2012) there were 5 registered earthquakes although only one of them was felt by the islands population.

In a period of 25 minutes, from 07.18 to 07.43AM, there were four earthquakes, of between 1.6 and 2 degrees on the Richter scale while the fifth occurred at 12.45PM with its epicentre in the sea, near the Valle del Golfo area, with a magnitude of 2.9 degrees which was felt by the islands population in the area of Frontera.

All of the earthquakes occurred at a depth of between 17 and 20 miles, according to the website of the National Geographic Institute.
