25 million euros a day – Cost of the volcanic ash
It is reported that the flight ban due to the Icelandic volcanic ash is costing the Canaries economy €25.000.000 a day and is calling this event the biggest crisis in the tourism economy the islands have seen. This amount has been worked out by multiplying the amount of tourists that have not been able to visit the islands due to the air space ban by the amount each tourist spends per day whislt on holiday, which is €100. The FEHT (Federación de Empresarios de Hostelería y Turismo) has indicated that many businesses and hotels are to lay off staff with immediate effect and when most of the tourists have been able to get home, it will leave many hotels and complexes with ‘zero’ tourists. It is said that (last night) there are approximately 124.000 people waiting to fly to their destinations.
