100.000 stranded tourists in the Canaries

According to Ashotel (Association of Hoteliers of Tenerife) estimates that there are around 100.000 stranded tourists in the Canary Islands that are unable to travel back to the country of origin and the same amount (100.000) that are not able to fly into the islands due to the volcanic ash from Iceland. Jose Manuel Bermudez (Turismo de Tenerife) has said that over 35.000 people have been offered accommodation which is being paid for by travel companies, airlines, AENA and Ashotel and has requested to the hotels that they offer any available accommodation at a ‘special’ price. José Fernando Cabrera, president of Ashotel, has said that this event will have ‘serious problems’ for tourism in the Canaries.
