Unprotected coastlines for Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

The coastlines of the islands closest to Africa, where most of the illegal immigrants arrive via ‘cayuco’ are currently unprotected, as released in a statement by a Guardia Civil union. The only boat available to cover the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura has had to be taken ashore due to lack of maintenance and has various faults which prevent it from being seaworthy. The boat that covered the island of Gran Canaria is in a similar state with no date given for either to re-enter service any time in the near future. This leaves the coasts of these islands completely unprotected and unmonitored leaving the islands wide open to the situation they had only a few years back where thousands of illegal immigrants entered he islands travelling over on small makeshift boats, some of these trips had tragic consequences.
