Slight decrease in Canary Islands unemployment

The total number of unemployed people in the Canary Islands fell last month (June 2013) when compared to May (2013) by 3,308 people which represents a decrease of 1.12% bringing the total number of unemployed in the Cnaaries to 293,054 people according to figures released today by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. Although this data is better than Mays figures for unemployment, where the Canary Islands were the only region in Spain where unemployment increased, this recent decrease is the lowest for the whole of Spain.

Of the 293,054 registered unemployed in the islands, 144,593 are men and 148,461 were women. 21,118 are under the age of 25 (10,795 men and 10,323 women).

By provinces, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ended June with 155,514 unemployed, 1,964 less than in May (-1.25%), but 982 more than the same period last year (+0.64%). Santa Cruz de Tenerife has 137,540 unemployed people, 1,344 less than in May (-0.97%), but 1,408 more than in June 2012 (+1.03%).

In the whole of Spain, unemployment decreased by 127,248 people in June compared to May (-2.60%), but still accumulates an increase of 148,411 unemployed when compared to last years figures (+3.22%).

Regarding foreign workers, of the 23,417 registered unemployed foreigners in the Canaries (15,165 of them are from outside the EU), 17,840 had previously worked in the service sector, 2,955 in construction, 651 in industry, 606 in agriculture and 1,365 had no previous occupation.
