Horse Meat detected in the Canary Islands

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs has seized nearly a ton of frozen hamburgers (over 7,000 units) which were found to contain traces of horsemeat. The burgers were being prepared for distribution to catering establishments across the Canaries.

As explained earlier today at a press conference, the Director General of Trade and Consumer Affairs Gustavo Matos, said that frozen meat has been distributed by a company in the Canary Islands via a parent company in Valencia and which has already sold the same products in mainland Spain. The company is said to be a subsidiary of an Irish firm. No brands have been named yet.

The company in question has distribution warehouses in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and distributes products in the hospitality industry, including restaurants and cafes, and also stores that sell food directly to consumers.
