New earthquakes hit the island of El Hierro in the New Year

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded 105 ‘low intensity’ earthquakes on the island of El Hierro since December 31st 2012. According to IGN, on Monday December 31st 2012 there were 50 quakes of a magnitude of between 1.5 and 2.2 degrees on the Richter scale and were located in the municipalities of Valverde and Frontera.

During Tuesday, January 1st 2013 there were a total of 36 earthquakes which had a magnitude of between 1.5 and 2.6 degrees on the Richter scale and were located in the north, south and west of municipality of Frontera. And so far today, Wednesday 2nd January 2013 there have been a total of five earthquakes on the island, the largest of 2.3 magnitude on the Richter scale. Sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre have reported that there have been no calls from the population of the island.
