Red alert for forest fires in the Canaries

Proteccion Civil has warned of the existence of a ‘red’ risk level of forest fires in many parts of Galicia, Extremadura, Andalucia and the Canary Islands. The rest of the country is at a medium-high risk (orange to yellow), with more danger in the case of Mallorca and Menorca, Murcia, La Rioja, Huesca and virtually all of Castilla y Leon. ‘Red’ level indicates the level II maximum alert, orange alert is the level I, yellow warns that there is danger and green and blue indicates normal. In this situation, Proteccion Civil advise not to light fires in the forest or land next to it and pay special attention to the controlled burning of rubbish in fields and disposing of lit cigarettes, garbage and glass bottles. Given the extreme heat, Proteccion Civil has suggested limiting sun exposure, staying in well-ventilated areas, consume light meals and drink plenty of water or fluids, and avoid prolonged physical exercise towards the middle of the day.
