The large European Solar Telescope (the EST) will be the largest in the world with its 4 meter in diameter mirror. The project of construction of the EST that will be installed in an observatory of the Islands, is coordinated by the ‘Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias’, and involves 15 countries of the European Union (EU). Today, the largest telescope of its kind is in America and has a mirror 1.6 meters in diameter. The EST project has three phases: conceptual design, detailed design and construction. At this point, the exact location of the telescope is not known, but it will be located in one of the two Canarian observatories, the Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma, or IzaƱa in Tenerife. The new solar telescope will have more power to study phenomena that originate in the Sun.
