Canaries coldest day in 40 years

The average temperature in the capital cities of the Canary Islands (Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) didn’t exceed 14 celcius yesterday (14th March 2011), making it the coldest day since 1971. Villages above 1.400 metres remained below zero. The last two nights have been the coldest this winter and one of the coldest of the last thirty years in the Canary Islands. In coastal areas of the Canaries thermometers didn’t exceed 12 celsius, a very unusual situation in the archipelago. There were reports of hail and snow on some coastal areas and local residents report that it is the coldest weather they have experienced.
