Valencia is now called… València

The city of Valencia has officially changed its name, following the unanimous vote by all parties in the council to change it’s name.

It will now carry an obert, or ‘open’ accent and be written in the regional language, valenciano, as ‘València’

In the original name, in Castilian Spanish, no accent is needed, however the old spelling does not work with local dialect. This means the city’s name is now said as ‘Val-EN-sia’ rather than ‘Val-EN-thia’.
