Two cases of Zika detected in Canary Islands. No risk to health

Canarian health officials have confirmed that two cases of the Zika virus have been detected in the archipelago.

The cases, in two women, neither of whom are pregnant, were detected as part of an ongoing screening operation. The two had been in Latin America in the 15 days prior to the virus being detected.

Both developed mild clinical symptoms but they have not required hospitalisation and are in good health. Officials have said there is little to no risk of transmission, as the breed of mosquito that carries the virus is not present in the Canaries.
