9 earthquakes hit island of El Hierro overnight

A total of nine earthquakes, two of which were felt by the islands, have been recorded in the sea off the coast of the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, according to data supplied by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

Of the two earthquakes which were felt by the residends of the island, one reached 2.4 on the Richter scale and was recorded at a depth of 13km. This movement was centered to the north-west of Frontera and was felt in the town of Tigaday, Las Casas and Taibique. This earthquake registered at 23:25 last night (Sunday, 6th October 2013). Just 30 seconds after this quake there was a slightly smaller one, registering 2.2 degrees on the Richter scale at a depth of 7km. This second ‘aftershock’ was also felt by residents of the island.

Of all nine earthquakes detected yesterday, the first was recorded at 01.59 at a depth of 13 km. to the south-west of Frontera with an intensity of 1.7 on the Richter scale, and the last was recorded at 23:29 hours with magnitude of 1.6 Richter in the same geographical location.
