Why Tenerife?

Tenerife has released a new model of economic development under the single brand “Why Tenerife?” which intends to convey the benefits and opportunities of investing in the island, and the expectations of business that aim to attract international public and private investors. It is the first time that institutions and agencies such as the Cabildo, Puertos de Tenerife, the Chamber of Commerce and the ZEC come together to optimise their resources with a unique message and a solid platform able to convince investors of the advantages of the island in International economic forums.

This new brand was launched on 22nd November 2012 by the president spoke of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, the financial vice-president, Carlos Alonso, the president of Ports of Tenerife, Zaragoza Pedro Rodriguez, the president of the ZEC, Beatriz Barrera, and Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Campos. During the presentation, which was conducted in Spanish, English and French with representatives of Morocco and Cape Verde, along with a large group of representatives of the social and economic sectors of the island, speakers talked about the unity that will raise the island to a strong position in a global and increasingly competitive market. Carlos Alonso stressed the importance of air connectivity and aims to position Tenerife in the world of telecommunication projects such as Alix. He also recalled that airports connect the island with 141 airports in various countries via 88 companies.

Regarding the importance of the ZEC, Beatriz Barrera said that “37% of the investments of the companies benefiting from this area come from outside: especially the European Union, but also from the United States”. Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza stressed the role played by Puerto de Tenerifes’ modern facilities, making them high on the list in the mid-Atlantic, and Modesto Campos recalled that “at present there are currently 90 Tenerife-based companies operating in Africa and America and that “internationalisation is in capital letters”, and “is not an option but an obligation for all”.
