Gran Canarias Maspalomas beach in loses its sand again

The beach of Maspalomas in the south of Gran Canaria has lost its sand again due the recent bad weather and now the project to regenerate the beach by moving 45,000 cubic meters of sand by lorries from Punta de la Bajeta is on hold. Officials from the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana say that ‘Costas’ has no money and that they prefer first concentrate on the new shopping centre.

“We will wait” is what the mayor of San Bartolome de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Perez, has said in relation to the loss of sand affecting the main tourist beach of Gran Canaria by the recent storms and bad weather. “For now we will not do anything,” the mayor was quoted to say in a statement on Wednesday 7th November 2012, when asked about the erosion effects on the beach.
