Tragedy on Lanzarote beach

A 54-year-old German man drowned yesterday afternoon (Monday 8th October) on the Famara beach, in an area known as ‘Los Noruegos’ after he suffered a heart attack while swimming and subsequently drowned. There were no other swimmers nearby at the time. His wife raised the alarm when he failed to return after going for a swim. An emergency call was made at around 14.00 activating a search effort by the emergency services. After being located by a rescue party on board the Emerlan rescue boat, the victim was taken ashore where resuscitation efforts were made but they were unable to save his life. At this time it is not known if the victim was a resident of the island or a tourist on holiday. This is the seventh known drowning on the island of Lanzarote so far this year (2012).

    I
hate hearing this sad news. Many drowning would be avoided If only folks took
notice of the red flags and swam on our many other safe beaches.

    Because
of under current & strong eddies Famara waters are dangerous, they always have
    been. Even the Germans

    with
or without a heart conditions should take great care in the water off Famara.I
