July 2012 in the Canaries – Less tourists, more spending
During the month of July 2012, the Canary Islands received less foreign tourists than the same month in the previous year (2011) but they spent more money, 3.7% more, reaching a total spend of €837 million. The average amount of money spent per tourist was €1,019 which is an increase of 5.2% according to a ‘tourist expenditure survey’ released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The report states that the amount of money spent by British tourists, which accounts for 33% of the total amount, is the highest increase during this month of July. In the whole country, foreign tourists spent €7,515 million in Spain during July, a rise of 8.9% compared to last year. British tourism brought €1.533 million to Spain last month, representing an increase of 9%. German tourists spent €1.139 million, an increase of 2.7%.

In the first seven months of the year, foreign visitors spent have spent a total of €5,899 million in the Canary Islands, 2.9% more than in the same period of 2011. There were also increases in the average spending per tourist (€1,016), an increase of 3%, and also a significant increase in the daily spend (€107), and increase of 10.1%. Nationally, foreign tourists spent €31,159 million between January and July this year an increase of 6.4% compared to the same period in 2011. During the month of July, 817,049 foreign tourists visited the Canary Islands according to figures supplied by AENA, 3.03% less than in 2011. So far this year, the Canaries have received 5,794,156 foreign tourists, representing a decrease of 2.19% (129,527 fewer passengers).

Canaries need to improve their ‘offer’ especially in the quality of accommodation . Unheated swimming pools when there is abundant solar energy is just one failing but there are many more ! People are voting with their feet and going further afield where there is better value for money – This is intended as constructive criticism as I love the Canaries .
I Love the Canary Islands and would love to go every year as we did in the past,sadly that’s not possible now because of ridiculous prices charged for flights and accommodation- flights more so. A family travelling to the Canaries (or anywhere in Europe really) has to reduce their “spending money” drastically because of inflated tour operator costs. Its very sad because The canary islands have it all and are at most only four and a half hours from the UK I have never had a bad experience holidaying in the Canaries. Sadly I can only go now every few years now due to the global recession and fear that this is the case for many families- both countries are suffering -tour operators in U.K. because families travelling less often and Spain for the same reasons. Very,very sad state of affairs.
