Canary Islands celebrate 2011 tourism increase

The tourism sector in the Canaries are celebrating as this year has been one of the best for the industry of the Islands, “if not the best,” admits the employer. There has been a record number of tourist arrivals this year, around 12 million visitors, revenues are on track to also beat a record. Foreign tourists spent €9.201 million in the Canaries up to November 2011, representing an increase of 12.9% over last years figures (2010) according to the Tourism Expenditure Survey (Egatur) published yesterday by the Institute of Tourism Studies, Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

Canary Islands, with revenues of €1,021 million in November (11.6% more than the same month last year) accounted for 33.7% of the total expenditure incurred in Spain for international tourists. The Deputy Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands Government, Ricardo Fernandez, said that it was ‘important’ to maintain these good results in occupancy and tourist spending for the year ahead (2012).
