Las Veronicas (Tenerife) to be demolished?
The ‘Las Veronicas’ area was the centre of entertainment in the south of Tenerife back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s and was well known was known throughout Europe by young tourists. Now it’s a completely different story. The obsession with pursuing ‘quality’ tourism has not been able to live alongside the nightlife. The streets are empty after dark. The businesses claim that the government has ‘got it wrong’, ‘The pickpockets and illegal street salespeople are still on the street’. Recently, the Arona Council met with traders to consider the possibility of reconstructing private investment through the locales that make up ‘Las Veronicas’.
The mayor, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, states that ‘the final solution is the demolition of existing buildings, and enable a future project, to ensure business profitability’. ‘This is an opportunity because the South needs a quality recreation area’, he added.
The business owners have agreed, in principal, but with varied concerns such as ‘What will happen if the works take three or four years to complete?’

To update you. Several private companies always offer each year private money to knock down nearly ALL of the commercial centers in the south of the island. They want to rebuild and give back 75% of the square meters to the owners. The owners must have a majority vote in order to accept these offers. Veronicas never has one vote.
