Slight rise in tourism in the Canary Islands

There has been a slight increase in tourism in the Canary Islands during January 2010 when compared to figures from the previous year. This, according to figures, breaks the tendency of a decrease month on month since the end of 2008. Although the increase is only 1.6% on last years figures, and the main figures are positive, the British tourism is still down 8.1% yet this decrease is still looked upon as positive as for the first time also since the end of 2008 the figures are below 10%. Also on a positive note, the Canaries is top of the league nationally by accounting for a 31.3% of all tourism.

Nationally, these positive figures are due to an increase in visitors from France (+5,5%), Italy (+19,1%), Belgium (+5,9%) and Switzerland (+16,5%). Negative figures include Great Britain (-8,1%), Germany (-6,3%), Ireland (-25.6%), Portugal (-21.7%) and Holland (-18.1%).
