Serious ship fire in Gran Canaria

A serious fire on board a Russian fish factory ship in the port of Las Palmas has forced the authorities to tow the vessel out to sea to allow it to sink.

The 70 crew were evacuated from the ship, called the Oleg Naidenov, after the blaze broke out on Saturday lunchtime as it was tied up in the Queen Sofia docks in the Gran Canaria capital.

The ship is now 30 miles off the coast, and is expected to sink soon.
