Alarm levels raised as earthquakes continue on El Hierro

The National Geographic Institute has reported 13 earthquakes this morning (Monday 26th September 2011), between 00.00 and 02:55 in El Hierro, with intensities below 2.7 degrees. As seismic activity has intensified in El Hierro in recent weeks the Canary Islands government has set the alarm level to ‘yellow’ for the population of El Hierro due to the variations of seismic-volcanic phenomenon which has been occurring on the island since last July 2011. The official meaning of the ‘yellow’ alarm, as described by the website set up for El Hierro eartquakes is as follows:
Once the yellow phase has been announced, you have to prepare for the unfavorable evolution of the phenomenon, and most importantly be aware of official messages:
