Volcanic ash causes 20% drop in tourism in Canaries during April

The Islandic Volcanic ash problem during April 2010 has caused a drop in tourism in the Canarias by just over 20%, according to recent figures released. National figures were also down by 13.3%. The most affected country of origin affected was the UK with a drop of 27.7% of tourists visiting Spain. Previous to this, tourism in Spain had experienced its first increase (of 3.2%) in 22 months. Tourism figures for Spain for the first 4 months in 2010 are now down by 4.3% when compared to figures for the same period during 2009.
