La Palma loses telescope battle to Chile

La Palma has lost its battle to house the giant 42 metre-in-diameter telescope named European Extremely Large Telescopa (E-ELT). La Palma had bid to have the telescope located on the island but it was recently announced that the telescope would be locted in ‘El Cerro Armazones’ in the Atacama Chilean desert. The desert is located at an altitude of 3.060 metres, 130 kilometres from Antofagasta and 20 kilometres from Cerro Paranal. Work is expected to commence before the end of the year and finish before 2018.
