Unemployment continues to rise in the Canary Islands

Unemployment in the Canary Islands has risen by 538 people in May 2013, up 0.28% from the previous month of April 2013, becoming the only Spanish community (along with Ceuta and Melilla) to see unemployment figures rise. Unemployment in Spain (nationally) fell in May for the third consecutive month, with 98,265 fewer people unemployed, bringing the total number of unemployed in Spain to 4,890,928 (-1.97%), according to data released yesterday by the Ministry Employment and Social Security.

The total amount of registered unemployed in the Canary Islands now stands at 296,362 people. Compared with May 2012, the islands have 3,134 more unemployed people, an increase of 1.07%.

By provinces, Las Palmas added 309 more people to the unemployment lists (+0.20%) reaching 157,478 unemployed, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife increased the number of unemployed people by 229 (+0.17%) totalling 138,884.

By gender, of the 296,362 unemployed people, 146,170 are men and 150,192 women. 22,307 of the unemployed are under 25 years.

In May 2013 there were 43,893 new contracts of work in the Canary Islands, 467 less than the previous month (April 2013).
