Foreign tourist spend increases in the Canaries
Foreign tourists have increased their spend in the Canary Islands by 7% between January and April 2013 (compared to the same period in 2012), spending a total of €3.983 million while on holiday in the Canary Islands, according to a survey by Egatur published recently by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The Ministry announced that in the first four months of the year, 3,607,019 tourists visited the Canary Islands, 1.2% less than the previous year.
In April (2013) alone, foreign tourists on their holiday in the Canaries spent €820 million, up 7.2% from a year earlier, with an average expenditure of €1,047 per person (up 7.9%) and €117 euros per person per day (up 6.0%). The Ministry attributed the good performance of the month of April to the contribution of its two main markets: the UK and Germany.
Foreign tourists visiting Spain (as a whole) in the first four months of the year spent €13.337 million, 7.5% more than in the same period of 2012. In April alone, international tourists visiting Spain spent €4.031 million, 5.5% more than the same month of 2012.
Up until the end of April, UK tourists spending led the table with €2.288 million, up 3.9%, followed by Germany with €2,208 million, a slight increase of 0.4%. The largest increases in spending in the first four months of the year were the French with an increase of 27.6% (€1.412 million), and the Nordic countries, up 17.5% up to €1.758 million. The only drop was the Italian tourist spend, (-19.1%) to €510 million.
