Tourism sector loses jobs despite increase in tourists

The Canary Islands have seen 3,400 jobs lost in the tourism sector in the first quarter of 2012, despite record visitor numbers. Tourism generated €3.048 million for the Canaries in the first three months of the year (2012), which is €178 million more than the same period in 2011, an increase of 6.2%.

Despite this new record revenue in the first quarter there were 166,259 employees related to tourism in the Canaries, which represents the loss of about 3,400 jobs (-2%) compared to the same period of 2011, as indicated in the latest report from the Ministry of Tourism.
