New Icelandic volcano eruptions cause flight cancellations in the Canaries

The eruption of another volcano in Iceland, the Grimsvotn, has already caused flight cancellations in the Canary Islands. A total of six flights have been cancelled in and out of the Canaries (three in and another three out) to date. One flight from the UK to Tenerife south was unable to land in the islands south airport of Reina Sofia and therefore was unable to take off later. Gran Canarias airport had to also cancel an arrival and subsequent take off and finally a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Fuerteventura was also cancelled. Today (Tuesday 24th May 2011) the airlines have 128 flights with the United Kingdom and Ireland, the main affected areas so far. Tenerife Sur has 70 connections with Britain and four with Ireland. Gran Canaria has planned 6 flights to the UK and 10 with Ireland, while Fuerteventura has 10 flights with the United Kingdom and 4 with Ireland. Finally, Lanzarote has 20 flights with the United Kingdom and four with Ireland.
