52 hikers rescued on La Palma after heavy rain

A group of 52 hikers who were trapped by heavy rain atthe Caldera de Taburiente (La Palma), have been evacuated from the National Park on the island and rescue services have also been brought to the area known as ‘Lomo de los Caballos’, in the municipality of El Paso. As reported by the Emergency Coordinator and Safety for the 112 emergency centre. The hikers condition is being monitored but they are all thought to be well. The hikers were part of several groups of hikers who were in the Caldera and could not continue their path due to the flooding of the ‘Barranco de Las Angustias’, which crosses the National Park due to heavy rains in the area. The Emergency Coordination Center and Security received a first warning at 15:20 hours yesterday (Friday 21st October 2011) from a group of 15 walkers who could not continue their course and then received ​​more calls from other hikers, none of them wounded or requiring health care . Emergency services helicopters were dispatched to the area  and flew over the Caldera to locate the hikers and group them. Hikers, some of them of German nationality, were concentrated in an area called the Pajero.
