The assembly of workers of the municipal service that deal with the cleaning and garbage collection in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife), agreed on Monday morning (7th November 2011) to announce an indefinite strike from this Thursday (10th November 2011), due to the fact that the company they work for, Sufi Tarajal, have not paid their workers their monthly salary for  October. Teófilo Armas, president of the commitee, said that the strike has been caused by the ‘lack of seriousness of a company that does not comply with its workers’. The company claims that it has not been paid by the Puerto de la Cruz authorities for three months. The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, marcos Brito, claims that no one has been in contact with them and that all parties need to ‘sit down, talk and resolve the issue’.  Teófilo Armas pointed directly to the company as the reason that Puerto de la Cruz  will ‘suffer a strike that will hurt the whole town’

There is an update for this story here.

The Tias City Council has raised the red flag on the ‘Pila de la Barrilla y Blanca’ beaches, better known as ‘Playa Chica’ and ‘Playa Grande’ respectively, which are located in the tourist area of Puerto del Carmen. This means that there is a bathing prohibition sign due to the presence of massive presence of jellyfish in the water. The beaches of Matagorda and Los Pocillos currently remain open as the municipal services have not detected the presence of jellyfish, whose sting can be dangerous to the health of people. It has, however, raised the yellow flag on these two beaches to exercise caution to the swimmers. Municipal services remain alert  in case they have to hoist the red flag in any other town or beach.
