The Meloneras beach (Playa Meloneras) in the south of Gran Canaria has re-opened after works have been carried out to remove the stones and rocks that were preventing access to the marina and the use of the beach and more sand has been deposited on the beach. Clean up tasks were carried out during four full days of work managed by the Urbaser, responsible for municipal cleaning service and maintenance of the beaches of the municipality. “With this action we have recovered a much needed beach for the tourism and especially for the local population, which has been virtually unusable for more than two years by a large pebble barrier that prevented users from accessing the sea” said the Mayor, José Carlos Alamo.

The mayor is aware of the existence of other important projects of improvement for this beach, which is currently stalled due to the lack of budget. “The desire of the municipal government is that these initiatives can begin as soon as possible, because not only will they result in a substantial improvement in Meloneras and its environment, but it will also improve the overall tourist image of the municipality,” said Jose Carlos Alamo.

Over 100 kilos of jellyfish have been washed up on the shores on Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria and eleven people have had to seek medical treatment after being stung by jellyfish on the “Playa Honda, Los Cristianos, Las Vistas y El Camisón” beaches of the south of Tenerife (where a yellow flag has been erected to warn visitors to the beach of the presence of these creatures).
Meanwhile in Gran Canaria, only one person has been stung so far. The type of jellyfish found on the beaches of the south of Tenerife are “Pelagia Noctiluca” with tentacles that can exceed 1 meter long. They are common throughout the Canaries and may appear at certain times of year, though experts have quoted “From now on will have to live with the jellyfish, due to the changes that the marine ecosystem are suffering”. The sensation, if stung by one of these creatures is “a pain and a burning sensation, although this is temporary.”
In Fuerteventura, the municipality of Puerto del Rosario ordered the closure of its main beach, Playa Blanca, due the presence of numerous jellyfish. Municipal employees put up signs in several languages warning of the danger.

Some years we get just the odd one: This year there have been quite a few.

The sting is a like nettle-rash and fades in 24 hours.

The ones to avoid are blue with a gas-filled bubble and long blue tentacles. They are called Portuguese Man o'War or Bluebottles, and give a nasty sting. Again the wash ashore sometimes, normally after storms.

The folk cure for jellyfish stings is lemon juice or vinegar, which stops any more stings from working because it is acid. Most lifeguards in the Canaries have jellyfish cream and fly a yellow, triangular flag if they are in the water.

Most people who swim in the Canary Islands won't even see a jellyfish, let alone be stung by one!

Related posts:

Lanzarote close beaches again due to ‘massive jellyfish’
Copyright © 2012. The islands airports are very expensive”. Mr. Fernandez insisted that Ryanair does not yet have a definitive view on this, but still expects that both the central and the regional government to reconsider and said that “lower costs operation of airports canaries that is, after all, what we want and what we will continue to maintain our operations with the Canaries normally and requested that the government “consider the good results in tourism last year before making a decision”.

Update : AENA has received over 2.000 claims against Spanair by passengers who have been affected by the recent closure of the airline company on Friday night. Spanair was due to fly around 23.000 passengers this weekend and the majority have either had to find alternative flights or are still waiting at airports. 222 flights were cancelled on Sunday (29th January) and 267 more were due to fly today (Monday 30th January).

Update : The government threatens to fine Spanair €9 million. Spanair could have committed two violations considered “very serious” in air safety law, punishable with a fine of up to €4.5 million each, plus the withdrawal of the license to operate, said a minister in a press conference. The first offense referred to in Article 37.3 of Law 21/2003 on aviation security which establishes the obligation to ensure continuity in service delivery. As for the second offence is a violation of Article 3721 of the Law 21/2003 on aviation security which establishes the obligation to carry out the activities with respect to the ‘rights of passengers’ which are regulated by EU regulation.

Update : 140 Spananir workers are affected in the Canaries after the collapse of Spanair.

Update : Around 1.400 people will have been affected today in the Canary Islands due to these issues. There is a help line which has been setup, the number is 900 131415. Eleven Spanair flights were due to leave from the Canary Islands today, one from Tenerife South, three from Tenerife North, two from Lanzarote and five from Gran Canaria, one of which is a charter flight to Norway. In a statement, the Canary Islands Government says that since yesterday afternoon it is in contact with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and AENA to track the incidence of closure of Spanair. The Spanair website www.spanair.com appears to not be working

Spanair has confirmed the suspension of operations yesterday evening after a deal with Qatar broke down. All their flights have been cancelled and it is also expected to present bankruptcy proceedings next week. All that is left of Spanair at the airport of El Prat in Barcelona are ‘Cancelled’ signs on the departures and arrivals screens. Even their desks have gone. The only Spanair staff are on the sales desk and are refusing to discuss the issue and are limited to pointing all affected travellers (estimated to be over 22.000 this weekend alone), to the Newco sales desk for more information.

The growing demand for bookings for the Canary Islands for the rest of this years winter season is causing a flurry of bookings for next years winter season, which has so far seen an increase of around 10%. The Nordic tour operators are unable to find available rooms in Gran Canaria for 2012/2013 winter season according to sources at this years FITUR trade fair in Madrid.

Employers acknowledged yesterday at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) that Scandinavian tour operators that have been looking for rooms in the Canary Islands, specifically Gran Canaria, have been unable to make any bookings due to the strong growth in demand which has forced accommodation providers to reject offers, some at very good prices.

The Canary Islands government has allocated €711,000 for this years stand at Fitur, one of the largest International Trade Fair in the world, to be held in Madrid from 18th to 22nd of January. Specifically, the assembly of the structure will cost €466,000, while the price of space will cost €245,000. This years budget is similar to that of 2010. The stand will occupy an area of 1,825 square meters and is the same that is used already in the World Travel Market (WTM) in London and is also used in the Berlin Fair. The main objective is to restore ‘national tourism’, which fell 10% in 2011 over the previous year, according to provisional data provided. In its attempt to ‘stand out’, the stand will have, among other technology, four multi-touch screens to view photos, videos and documents and a ‘Kinect’ system, capable of detecting movements of people.
