AENA however, claim that they have not received a formal request for this.

The Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura, the Association of Hotels and Tourism (AEHTF) have accused AENA of slowing down the development of tourism on the island and prevent them from reaching more than 100,000 tourists every year. The minister of tourism, Ernie Acosta, said that the airport needs to be open at the same times in which they operate other international airports.

AENAs response is that they "are willing to consider any request and to arrange a meeting as soon as possible with institutions and business associations supporting the arrival of more tourists if the opening hours are extended" and that "there has been a huge investment in recent years in the islands airport to provide sufficient capacity and providing a high quality service with highly competitive rates for aircraft operators."

Just over 916,000 foreign tourists travelled to the Islands. So far this year there has been an increase of 5.6% (48,000 more visitors). Tenerife has seen the highest rise in tourism.

The Deputy Minister for tourism in the Canaries, Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas, said that "this increase continues the upward trend that we have been getting in recent months and shows we are on the right track. This has been possible thanks to joint work we are doing with all agents in the sector ".

Fernandez de la Puente Armas said that markets like Russia, Poland, Italy and France have seen increases in the beginning of the year with increases of 41.21%, 54.58%, 18.10% and 11.28% respectively. It is also expected to continue growing this year thanks to, among other reasons, the planned joint promotional activities to attract these visitors. "

The island of Fuerteventura in January 2012 saw the arrival of 131,851 foreign passengers, representing an increase of 1.92% over January 2011, with 2,479 foreign passengers more. Meanwhile, Gran Canaria last month received 291,253 foreign passengers, representing an increase of 1.92% over January 2011, with 5,475 more foreign passengers.

Tenerife saw 352,627 foreign passengers visit the island, 33,344 more than in January 2011, representing an increase of 10.44%. As for Lanzarote, it received 129,177 foreigners, which translates into 5,495 more than in January last year, an increase of 4.44%.

Over the last couple weeks there have been a couple of earthquakes over 3 degrees Richter but the IGN say that this is not symbolic of any new 'phase' or new eruption process.

The most significant quake in the last 10 days was on 04/02/2012 @ 04:40 measuring 3.2 degrees located to the south-west of the island.

Nationally, in Spain, the illegal immigration by sea saw an increase of 49.8% last year, a total of 5,443 people. During the month of January 2012 there were a further 8,414 people unemployed which also represents the biggest increase since March 2009.

These figures are in conflict with the figures released only a few days ago by the National Statistics Institute which placed at the end of 2011 the number of unemployed in Canary 341,900. The difference between the data relates to the fact that the Ministry of work and social security computes only those who are enrolled in the "SCE" to collect the unemployment benefit, access to training courses or receive job offers, while the EPA also includes any person who, without being registered with the INEM, is actively seeking work.

The rise in unemployment in the Canaries is split almost equally between the two provinces: 4,138 more unemployed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro) and 4,276 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote in 4276.

Monarch is the second airline in the British market, and last year transported to Tenerife to 335,844 tourists, 10.6% more than in 2010. It performed 1,682 operations, 5.4% more than the previous year.

Jet2 brought to the island last year 132,994 passengers, 37% more than in 2010. For this company, Tenerife is the leading destination with 650 operations in 2011, representing an increase of 33%.

The German operator Condor, meanwhile, has ruled out opening new lines to Tenerife North airport which they had planned if they the bonuses remained. Condor last year brought the island 224,650 tourists, up 9.9% in 2010 thanks to 1,125 operations (10% increase).

Chief executive of Tourism, Carlos Alonso, said that "These cuts, plus the closure of Spanair have put Tenerife and the Canary Islands in a difficult situation for the tourist market and their own external connectivity. The confusion is not good for the industry and we can not stay silent when in this region there is an unemployment rate of 30%".

Clean up tasks were carried out during four full days of work managed by the Urbaser, responsible for municipal cleaning service and maintenance of the beaches of the municipality. "With this action we have recovered a much needed beach for the tourism and especially for the local population, which has been virtually unusable for more than two years by a large pebble barrier that prevented users from accessing the sea" said the Mayor, José Carlos Alamo.

The mayor is aware of the existence of other important projects of improvement for this beach, which is currently stalled due to the lack of budget. "The desire of the municipal government is that these initiatives can begin as soon as possible, because not only will they result in a substantial improvement in Meloneras and its environment, but it will also improve the overall tourist image of the municipality," said Jose Carlos Alamo.
