Tenerife will once again be attending Fitur in Madrid this year (2010) in a bid to increase tourism for the island. Fitur will be open from 20th to 24th January 2010. The aim is to promote the island to the National market.

Catering strikes threaten Tenerifes airports

Strikes being carried out by catering company Newrest are threatening to leave aeroplanes leaving Tenerife’s Reina Sofia and Los Rodeos airports without food. The employees are striking over recent cuts to overtime hours and therefore impacting on employees wages.

Tourism down over 11%

So far this year year tourism has dropped around 11.5% in the number of people visiting Tenerife. In recent figures published by the Tenerife Cabildo, 4.3 million tourists stayed on the island up to the end of November. Down over 11% when compared to last years figures.

20 tons of rubbish on Granadillas streets

Over 20 tons of rubbish have accumulated on Granadilla de Abonas streets (including El Medano and San Isidro due to a strike by the staff of the company contracted to collect the municipalities rubbish. The dispute is over pay.

Three hotels close down in Puerto de la Cruz

Two hotels have already closed in the tourist area of Puerto de La Cruz in the north of Tenerife and a further one has announced its imminent closure, leading to the loss of around 200 jobs. La Paz and Xibana Park have closed and Chiripa Park is due to close on the 20th December (2009).
