In the case of the double murder committed close to Callao Salvaje during January, a suspect has been arrested in Germany and deported to Tenerife, where, on 25th April, he was admitted to prison. He had been arrested once before, but despite the serious charges, had been set free. In the incident on 12th January, three Eastern Europeans who were travelling in a car were intercepted by another vehicle in which four or five people were travelling. Following the impact between the two vehicles, two men were brutally murdered and another was seriously injured but managed to escape from the scene. One of the victims had his head smashed, and the other had his throat cut. The injured survivor suffered bruising and stab wounds. The most plausible hypothesis points to the fact that they were members of two opposing gangs, one of which had committed several robberies at industrial premises, actions which had annoyed the other gang. The attackers were apparently hired hit-men who left the island immediately following the incident.

In Gran Canaria, National Police officers have recently detained a 30 year-old Nigerian man who is accused of sexual assault. He had been employed as a doorman at a discotheque in Maspalomas, and had invited a 23 year-old Irish tourist to join him for a few drinks after he had finished work. He took her to a few bars in the area, using his own car. Later, he drove her to a quiet area near to the sand dunes where he tied her up so that she could not escape and assaulted her in the car. Afterwards, he dumped her and drove away. She sought help from some locals in the area, and eventually reported the incident to the National Police. She was then taken to hospital in Las Palmas for treatment. The man was arrested four days later.

In the south of Tenerife, in the opinion of the Socialist group of the Ayuntamiento of Arona, the future of Los Cristianos lies in the joining together of the main beach with the Playa de los Tarajales. The plans for reconditioning the beach at Los Tarajales has been discussed wsince the year 1995, and was apparently promoted by other politicians following a recent visit to Madrid. But nothing has yet been done on this project, which is considered essential to the local economy.
