In the south of Tenerife, firemen made several visits to the Los Cristianos area last week following reports of possible gas leaks. Various businesses were evacuated in Avenida General Franco and other nearby streets. Some people reported smelling “gas” and others “gasoil”, which is diesel. Firemen detected the smell, which had reached an alarming level, and which emanated from the drains. These were diluted immediately. The Alcalde of Arona stated that there could be two possible causes. One could be the fermentation of fluids inside the drainage system, and the other could be a possible leakage from one of two petrol stations in the town. Several days later, investigations were still continuing to determine the origin.

Firemen employed by Tenerife´s Consorcio have announced an indefinite strike, to take place from the 18th of this month. Apparently, a series of petitions which have been placed since 14th October have remained unanswered. As with Gran Canaria´s firemen, they are claiming that the Consorcio is severely understaffed, especially in La Laguna, La Orotava, San Miguel, Santa Cruz and Icod de los Vinos – which only has 4 full-time firemen to cover a population of 52,000 together with La Guancha, El Tanque, Garachico, Los Silos, Buenavista and San Juan de la Rambla. The firemen are also requesting improvements to their vehicles and fire stations. It also appears that married firemen receive a different salary level from singles, even singles who live with a partner, regardless of the fact that they perform the same job.

In the south of Tenerife, a thief was caught red-handed by Local Police officers based in Arona. He was seen stealing a mobile phone from a handbag belonging to a tourist in the Starco area of Playa de las Américas. She had laid the bag on a shelf in a telephone cabin while she made a call. In the Veronicas area, officers also trapped a person who operated in the area ripping handbags from tourists. He was finally caught during a 300-metre chase, when he threw a bag beneath a parked car. The bag was eventually returned to its owner.
