Update 26/06/2012 @ 10:43 – The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded 27 earthquakes on the island of El Hierro. The largest earthquake measured 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale. The first recorded earthquake occurred on Tuesday at two minutes into the day and was located twelve miles west of depth herreño Border town in the north of the island. The highest magnitude was recorded at 04.11AM today, at a depth of 19 kilometers.
Published 25/06/2012 – The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has detected a total of 52 earthquakes around the island of El Hierro, the largest has been a magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale. This last movement was recorded at 03.09 (GMT) today, Monday 25th June 2012 just 19 kilometres south-west of the town of Frontera.
All earthquakes, except one at El Pinar, were recorded in this area. The second largest earthquake, a magnitude of 3.4 degrees on the Richter scale, occurred at 06.27 today to the south-west of Frontera, in the north of the island and was felt by the population.
The IGN are currently studying this new series of earthquakes.
