Canaries 112 Emergency Services to use Twitter
The 112 emergency services in the Canary Islands are to start using Twitter to inform the population of serious incidents, items of interest and weather alerts. This new channel is for informational purposes only. Requests for help, support and emergencies should be made, as always, via the 112 emergency telephone number. The launch of this new service coincides with the 14th anniversary of the launch of the 112 service.
Since 1998, the Canaries have been integrated into the European Emergency System, European Union 396/1991, which recommends Member States to implement a single phone number (112) for access to all emergency services in the EU countries.
Within minutes of an important incident being reported to the 112 emergency line, a tweet will be sent via the @112canarias Twitter account to all those who have followed this account. Then, where necessary, after the incident has cleared, a new tweet will be sent that contains a link to the detailed information relating to the incident.
