There has been a decrease of 95% in the arrival of illegal immigrants in ‘pateras’ (small boats carrying illegal immigrants normally from the coats of Africa) when comparing figures from January – July of this year to those of 2009. So far this year only 38 people, in 7 pateras, have arrived via this mode of transport, of which 8 were children. Since figures began in 1994, over 96.000 people have arrived via patera from African coasts.
