British Pound Exchange RateLanzarote will be celebrating the 700th anniversary of the islands discovery by the Genovese navigator Lancelotto Mallocelo in 2012. As island authorities plan a programme of events to mark this historic date.
Malocello is credited with first discovering the island – which was subsequently named after him – before it was eventually conquered for the Spanish crown in the early 1400’s. Current proposals to mark the anniversay include twinning Lanzarote´s capital city Arrecife with his birthlace – the small Italian town of Varazze and the creation of an international congress to prmote the explorers exploits.
