Strikes being carried out by catering company Newrest are threatening to leave aeroplanes leaving Tenerife’s Reina Sofia and Los Rodeos airports without food. The employees are striking over recent cuts to overtime hours and therefore impacting on employees wages.

Unemployment up 22.5%
Unemployment is up 22.5% in the Canary Islands, compared to last year. There are now 249.000 people out of work in the Canaries. By provinces, Tenerife has 113.000 unemployed, up 24.5% and Gran Canaria has 135.000 unemployed, up 20.98%.
Canaries airports shut down for 25 minutes
All eight of the Canary Island airports were shut down yesterday for 25 minutes due to a power outage in the air traffic control centre, causing delays of up to one hour mainly to international flights. The fault ocurred at 11.30AM and was resolved by 11.55AM and disrupted 43 flights.
130 million euros for tourist municipalities
The Canarian Goverment is to give 130 million euros to 12 tourist municipalities including some in La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro to give the areas a ‘needed improvement for the visiting tourists…’
More flights delayed due to strikes
Over 250 flights were delayed yesterday (30th Dec 2009) for up to 2 hours due to the bad weather adding to the fact that the air traffic control staff are on strike.
